The Orange County Register editorial "A Lawsuit We Can't Toast" criticizing a lawsuit filed against the city council by residents over a development project exemplified California's dubious reputation of being one of the most litigious states in the country, ranking 45th out of the 50 states. Cities and counties are already struggling to make ends meet, lawsuits such as this only divert funds away from areas where they are desperately needed. At a time when California is facing its worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, people are losing their jobs and businesses are moving to states with a less hostile business climate, we need to push for legal reform to ensure unwarranted and frivolous lawsuits are not rewarded. We agree with the Register, this is "a lawsuit we can't toast."
