(WASHINGTON, DC) – This week, Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) is marking Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week, October 5–9, by raising awareness of the growing impact excessive litigation has on consumers, small businesses, and communities across the country.

As affordability remains a top concern for Americans, Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week aims to shine a light on the hidden costs of excessive litigation. Lawsuit abuse drives up the cost of everyday goods and services, including groceries, health care, and insurance. American families pay $5,579 every year due to excessive litigation, a hidden cost known as the “tort tax.”

“Lawsuit abuse isn’t just a courtroom issue, it’s a kitchen table issue that impacts Americans in their everyday lives,” said Victor Gomez, National Spokesperson of Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse. “As a small-business owner, I understand how rising costs and the threat of litigation can make it harder to operate and grow. Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week is an opportunity to expose these hidden costs and highlight why commonsense legal reforms are so desperately needed.”

CALA continues to highlight the real-world consequences of excessive litigation by sharing a first-hand look at consumer and small-business owner experiences, while simultaneously raising awareness of reforms that strengthen the civil justice system while protecting access to justice.
