Illinois Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse Applauds BIPA Reform But Urge Lawmakers to Go Even Further to Protect Small Businesses

(SPRINGFIELD)—Yesterday, the Illinois Senate proposed and passed bipartisan changes to Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).

Illinois Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (IL-CALA) has urged lawmakers to reform BIPA throughout the years as this law has had a devastating impact on our state’s business community since it was enacted in 2008. BIPA has opened a lucrative avenue for our state’s trial lawyers to take advantage of business owners who deploy cutting edge technology to operate their businesses.

“Small business across Illinois looking to use technology to remain competitive breathed a huge sigh of relief yesterday as the Senate took a good first step towards addressing BIPA lawsuit abuse with amendments to SB 2979,” said Philippe Melin, Executive Director of IL-CALA. “While this is a great first step, more work still needs to be done to protect Illinois businesses and CALA will continue to encourage lawmakers to pursue those reforms.

“We thank Senators Cunningham and Curran for their bipartisan leadership and urge the General Assembly to follow the Senate’s lead.”

Illinois Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (IL-CALA) is a nonpartisan, grassroots movement working to end rampant lawsuit abuse in Illinois. IL-CALA advocates for commonsense legal reform measures by educating the public about the devastating, real-world costs of lawsuit abuse on working families and small businesses.
